Dallas, TX - The Dallas Mavericks may have lost a heartbreaker, but rookie phenom Cooper Flagg delivered a performance for the ages. The 19-year-old forward erupted for 49 points on 20-of-29 shooting (3-of-5 from deep, 6-of-6 free throws), adding 10 rebounds and 3 assists. In the process, Flagg shattered the NBA record for points in a game by a teenager (previously 45, set in 1980) and broke the Mavericks' single-game rookie scoring mark previously held by Mark Aguirre.

Flagg did everything he could to will Dallas to victory, pouring in points from all over the floor and recording the highest scoring game by any NBA rookie since 2019. His night included a 25-point first half and clutch buckets down the stretch to keep the Mavericks in the fight. It was also the first time in over 50 years that two opposing rookies each scored 30+ in the same game, as Charlotte's own rookie standout Kon Knueppel countered with 34 points of his own.

Ultimately, Flagg's heroics weren't quite enough. Charlotte edged Dallas 123-121 after Knueppel stole a pass from his former Duke teammate in the final seconds, then sank the go-ahead free throws. "Ten years from now, I think we'll both look back on this as something pretty special," Flagg said of dueling with his close friend on an NBA stage. Knueppel had high praise as well, calling Flagg's performance simply "in control".

Even in defeat, Flagg's record-breaking night electrified the home crowd and announced his arrival as a future superstar. At just 19 years old, the No. 1 overall pick is already living up to the hype. He's giving Mavericks fans plenty of hope that brighter days are ahead.
